about

Release number fifty? Truthfully, that's difficult to imagine. Let's back up a
bit…

Pete and I communicated regularly, but I'm sad to say I never met him in person. I'd been working directly for him as the US distributor of the FAX +49-69/450464 label and I appreciated his sense of humor, his no-nonsense attitude, and of course, his music.

Carpe Sonum was born in 2013 as a way to honor Namlook and the FAX label. There would be no more music from Pete, and no more FAX releases–as a result, it soon became clear that various projects intended to be released on FAX were now in limbo. In addition, numerous FAX artists were "orphaned" without Namlook–at least when it came to the kind of music that FAX was known for releasing.

In addition to carrying the FAX torch, so to speak, Carpe Sonum’s raison d’être was to offer a home to these "orphaned artists." The releases that followed Die Welt ist Klang were primarily from FAX alumni–Thomas P. Heckmann, Lee Anthony Norris, Mick Chillage, Gabriel Le Mar, Krystian Shek, and Lorenzo Montanà. I'm proud to say that these great artists have continued to release music on Carpe Sonum, and, along the way, the roster has grown to include other luminaries in the ambient/electronic world such as Saafi Brothers, David Morley, Dr. Motte, Rapoon, Frans de Waard, Robert Rich, and Massimo Vivona (himself a former FAX artist).

Notice that fewer than half the tracks here are from former FAX artists, which reflects the growth of the label beyond its original mission. We continue to prioritize releases from former FAX artists, while also acting as a springboard for as-yet-unknown artists we hope to expose to a wider audience.

At times it seems like a dream, albeit one which started out as a disturbing nightmare and gradually morphed into a joyful recounting of the love and admiration that the electronic music community has for Namlook and the FAX label. At other times it feels like a solemn duty, an unwavering passion to move the needle forward in the process of honoring a musical giant. So much so, that I never even thought about the milestone of our 50th release. In fact, it was my graphic artist who brought up the idea of Carpilation. With the exception of this short missive I’ve penned, Carpilation has been entirely his idea and conception, and for that I am grateful.

It is not lost on me that none of this would have been possible without you, the fans. THANK YOU for your enthusiastic support of this modest attempt to keep the spirit of Pete and FAX alive.

ABOUT THE MIX

Compiled in the tradition of FAX's Ambient Cookbook, which became both a sort of a bible and an introductory guide to the unique ambience from the first few years of FAX, Carpilation features standout tracks, essential pieces, and indispensable moments selected over the course of these first seven years of the Carpe Sonum label. With the exception of the track "Multiverse"–which is a full-length version unique to this compilation–the tracks are heavily mixed to create a cohesive ambient journey and provide a must-have listening experience for our fans. Transitions as long as a minute not only create an immersive dive into the best that Carpe Sonum has to offer, but also generate new, unique moments created from the melding of two great tracks. We hope this compilation will be cherished, revered, recommended, and referenced as much as its predecessors.

about

Carpe Sonum Records Boulder, Colorado

We're here because of Pete Namlook. We were the North American distributor of FAX and decided to pay tribute to him with an 8-CD boxed set entitled Die Welt ist Klang. Since we couldn't release that box on FAX, we started Carpe Sonum.
